Illustration workshop with guest teacher Fanny Dreyer from 30.06. – 06.07.2025 in Erlau (Odenwald)
The course
In this course we will bring together our present experience of nature with memories and fragments collected throughout our early years of live.
Visually encouraged by childhood photos and the natural elements we found at site we build up a collection of ideas and drawings including landscapes, atmospheres, details and characters.
During this process the use of color and a variation of techniques will guide us towards a personal point of view. And while observation will be our starting point, the interplay of figuration and abstraction will open up new ways of expression, which we will explore not only on paper, but also on other media such as wood, stone or fabric.
Like gardeners we pay attention to the seeds we find in our collections and take care of the plants that may arise from them. Little by little we will see how our assemblage of landscapes and their inhabitants can grow into an imagery and narrations about ourselves.
Guest teacher
Fanny Dreyer grew up in Switzerland, not too far from the mountains, near the forest. She moved to Brussels after graduating from high school to study illustration in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
Her pictures oscillate between realism and naïve art. They feature a wide palette of techniques, ranging from felt-tip to pencil, from the use of acrylic to inks that bleed into each other and sometimes risograph printing.
Not limiting herself to a single graphic style, she offers a multi-faceted universe that sees landscapes, folklore, and children take on a singular importance.
She currently lives and works in Brussels, splitting her time between children’s books, illustrations for the press and cultural sector, painting and embroidery, children’s workshops, as well as the illustration collective Cuistax, which she co-founded.
Fannys most recent book „Collections“ won numerous awards, including the Most beautiful Swiss children‘s book.
Other projects lately allowed her to go beyond the book as format and approach images in different ways: She realized a collection of porcelain pieces in Japan and installations in a new Belgian hospital as well as in a Paris metro station.
