Ceramics and Textile Workshop with Franziska Schüller and Johanna Schmal from 02.09. – 08.09.2024 in Erlau (Odenwald)

„The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life.“ — William Morris

The course
In this course everything turns around the table, the centre of our homes, the place to meet, connect and nourish. We want to dedicate this week to give shape to the objects that inhabit our tables, handcrafted ceramics and textiles that bear their own soul and bring joy to our everyday lives. We dive into the beauty of working with the most natural materials - clay and plants coming directly from the grounds - unfolding their haptics and colors into applied little artworks. We will explore the crafting techniques of handbuilded ceramics, plant dyeing and hand-quilting with a focus on an intuitive and experimental design process.
While we create throughout the week our chef Mélanie Wehrli will perform her magic in the kitchen and together we will round up our table experience with a cooking night on Saturday taking home new recipes and edible inspiration.

Please note:
The ceramics will be taken home bisque fired. To finish them, the glaze firing needs to be organized afterwards. Everybody who lives near by, can bake their ceramics at Franziskas studio in Gross-Umstadt.

The teachers
The course will be guided by ceramist Franziska Schüller and artist Johanna Schmal. Before founding her pottery studio zis-sachenauston in 2020 Franziska studied art history and art-media-cultural education. After her graduation she developed workshops for aesthetic and cultural education with different institutions - since 2017 with a focus on the material clay. In her studio she creates pottery herself, parallel to courses for adults and children, always promoting her students individuality. Franziska sees pottery as a pure part of wabi-sabi in which self-reflection is stimulated through the process-based engagement with the natural and primary material.
Johanna graduated in architecture where she developed a subtle sense of atmosphere, materiality, haptics and context, that strongly shapes her artistic work. In 2015 she expanded this discipline with a specialization in illustration at EINA Barcelona, creating since then artwork that was exhibited in artspaces and galleries in Germany, Portugal and Spain. She works across media in drawing, painting, collage and textile arts. This is where she explores traditional craftsmanship such as plant dyeing, quilting and embroidery with a view to a contemporary expression and a transformative and holistic process.
